Post Show Highlights

Hour 1: Hugues Girard reassured us that he and his family were spared by Irma and updated us on the aftermath of the hurricane in the rest of  Florida, the Jovenel Moïse administration's modification of the diaspora tax after much pressure and recent protests against the administration. We then talked about Caribbean solidarity for relief efforts in Puerto Rico and often overlooked Dominica, as well as some of the politics surrounding these disasters. Hour 2: Darnell Benoît, a teacher, introduced us to the Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project which she founded 12 years ago and manages to this day.  Although I'd initially thought that the organization worked with adults, it actually focuses on high school students who have recently migrated from Haiti, do not speak English and are in danger of not graduating. Flanbwayan  advocates for them at the city level, creates a haven for them, both pairing them with resources to help them graduate and providing a culture-filled environment for them after school. Legacy of 1804 with Dr. Philippe Lerebours #LOF1804 #Haiti

 

This Friday at 9PM join host artist Andre Juste as he interviews Dr. Philippe Lerebours on his life and legacy documenting Haitian art history.

Dr. Lerebours is the author of "Haiti et Ses Peintres de 1804 à 1980".  He has a doctorate in Art History from the Sorbonne University in Paris. In a career that spanned decades, he had many responsibilities, including director and curator of the Musée d’Art Haitien du Collège St. Pierre and Head of the National School of the Arts (ENARTS).

He was honored twice this past summer for his lifetime achievements by Haitian organizations in Queens and Brooklyn.

Host Andre Juste  is an artist and art writer evolving in the New York art scene whose work has been noted for defying stereotypes of Haitian art. He has contributed a chapter titled Haitian Art to Henry Louis Gates and Anthony Appiah's Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience.

Marian Douglas-Ungaro is a Black American woman writer and "semi-public Intellectual." A native of Washington, DC, she is a broadcast journalist and international consultant in elections and human rights who has worked in international CIVILIAN (NON-military) election and human rights missions in countries in the Americas (including Haiti) and also in former Yugoslavia. She is the founder of AFROAMERICAS, a 501(c)3 non-profit organisation working for real recognition, justice, and grassroots development for the Afrodescendant People of the Americas. Currently focused on implementing, observing, and celebrating the International Decade for People of African Descent, 2015-2024. She speaks and works in five (5) languages.

Legacy of 1804 with Dr. Matthew Smith #Haiti #Jamaica #History

Historian and UWI professor  Matthew J. Smith joins me tonight at 9PM  to discuss his research about Haiti-Jamaica migratory relations before 1915. At the time, Jamaica was the place where Haitian presidents went into exile then and in 1900 Jamaicans were the biggest group of English speakers in Haiti.

He will tell us about his latest book on the topic: Liberty, Fraternity, Exile: Haiti and Jamaica after emancipation.

We'll also discuss broader patterns of inter-Caribbean migration during that time.

Legacy of 1804 on Digicel Blocks VoIPs in the Caribbean #Haiti #LOF1804 #netneutrality

Digicel has blocked VoIP access (Viber, Tango etc) in Haiti, Trinidad and Jamaica. Other cell phone carriers such as Lime have done so as well. This has generated a firestorm on Caribbean social media, at least one petition and a reaction by the Trinidadian Telecom regulatory body which reinstated VoIPs in Trinidad while it deliberates the issue.

Pascal Antoine pointed out that Digicel's competitor NatCom has not blocked VoIPs.

Legacy of 1804 on Maurice Bishop and Grenada Revolution #lof1804 #forwardever

Join me and Michelle Materre, founder of Creatively Speaking Film Series and host of Creativey Speaking on the Air tonight June 20th at 9PM as we welcome Bruce Paddington, maker of the documentary Forward Ever. The film investigates the Grenadian revolution of 1979 which culminated in the killing of Maurice Bishop and several of his colleagues in 1983. (Bruce is with us for the first half hour.)

We are then joined by Trinidadian-American trade unionist Roger Toussaint and cultural activist Martin Felix who came of age in Grenada during the revolution, to explore aspects of this oft neglected chapter of Caribbean history. How was this movement for self-determination launched in the pre-social media era? Why did Reagan take exception to the building of an international airport in Grenada? Did US involvement start at the post-killing invasion or was the Grenadian movement for self-determination infiltrated and destabilized?

Bertin M. Louis, Jr. is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Africana Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Louis studies the growth of Protestant forms of Christianity among Haitians in the Bahamas and the United States, which is featured in his forthcoming New York University Press book, “My Soul is in Haiti: Migration and Protestantism in the Haitian Diaspora of the Bahamas (2014).” He also studies stateless Bahamians of Haitian Descent.

Dr. Louis also informs students, faculty, and the public via radio and television about Haitian history and culture. Most recently, he created #ShamelesslyHaitian, a trending topic on Twitter.

Legacy of 1804 with guests Manbo Dowoti Désir and Katleen Félix (AUDIO) #Haiti #Podcast

My guest last week on Legacy of 1804 was Manbo Dowoti Désir. We discussed Fèt Gede, the alleged cuttings of mapou trees by protestant missions in Haiti and the June 2012 constitutional amendment which repealed safeguards for religious freedom built into the 1987 Haitian constitution. We also discussed CARICOM's slavery reparations case. 

Dowoti Désir is a Manbo Asogwe and a scholar of Haitian Vodou. She is the Founder and President of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action Watch Group (www.ddpawatchgroup.info). She utilizes interfaith exchanges and cultural diplomacy to facilitate better understanding of AfroAtlantic spiritual systems in the global North. She has written extensively about the contemporary and sacred arts of the African Diaspora, its religions and sociopolitical issues impacting the global African community. Her book, 'Wòch Kase wòch: Redlining a Holocaust, Memorials and the People of the AfroAtlantic,' focusing on the right to memory, the built environment, and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, will be available in 2014. She is a graduate of Barnard College and has a Master's degree from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.

In the second hour, we also talked to Katleen Félix of Fonkoze and Zafèn about the 2nd Annual NAHP conference which took place last weekend.

"The blogosphere offers yet another example of transnational Black Nationalist expression. Usually created by highly educated individuals residing in the USA or Europe, a number of African and Caribbean blogs have surfaced on the Internet. As illustrated by Christophe Celius' Rapadoo Observateur and Alice Backer's kiskeácity, these blogs function as “virtual embassies” of the nation, providing critical information on politics, society, and culture. They also serve as a rallying force for the Diaspora, informing them about local events such as concerts, film festivals, or community functions celebrating an event or holiday from their native land. Last but not least, they promote economic development by informing the Diaspora and any virtual visitors about possibilities in their respective homeland. In many ways, this form of transnational Black Nationalism is a reaction to the social and political forces that led to the uprooting or “diasporization” of Caribbean and African people in the USA. Indeed, if unstable sociopolitical conditions and dire economic circumstances often forced Caribbean and African people to reside in the USA and other Western countries, these very conditions do not preclude them from participating in their homeland's political and socioeconomic affairs. In fact, one may argue that it stim- ulates interaction with the homeland, making the virtual world a much necessary medium to participate in the affairs and development of the sending society. Thus, the virtual world operates as an extension of the nation, offering the Caribbean and continental African Diaspora in the USA the much-desired opportunity to participate in the nation-building process."

My guest last night on LOF1804 was Dr. Millery Polyné. Topics include the Oct 25th Diaspora in Dialogue conference, the recent ruling stripping Dominicans of Haitian descent of Dominican citizenship and the idea of Haiti.

Millery Polyné is an Associate Professor at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study.  A graduate of Morehouse College and the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in History, Millery's teaching and research interests include the intellectual history of African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans in the 19th and 20th centuries.  He is the author of From Douglass to Duvalier: U.S. African Americans, Haiti and Pan Americanism, 1870-1964 (University Press of Florida, 2010) and the editor of The Idea of Haiti: Rethinking Crisis and Development.
