POST-SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

We discussed Brian's progressive vision in contrast to Mathieu Eugène's track record over the past 10 years and the many missed opportunities for the 40th council district during those years. We also talked about how Brian plans to solve the affordable housing crisis plaguing Brooklyn: not taking campaign funds from real estate developers unlike his opponent and developing more city-owned affordable housing. Brian also discussed his immigrant background and the many years that his mother spent undocumented, identifying ice raids as a major challenge for his district.

If Brian wins on Tuesday, which we hope he does, it will be a major upset for politics as usual in NYC local races. A lifelong Democrat, he is running on the Reform Party line against Democratic Party incumbent Mathieu Eugene to whom he lost the Democratic Primary by a thin margin.

POST-SHOW HIGHLIGHTS/LIVE TWEETS

We had a great and diverse conversation with former Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe with lots of questions from listeners and a very active tweetup which you can find below.  Lamothe explained what bitcoin is and why he believes it is a good technology to adopt in Haiti, including by the Central Bank issuing a haitian cryptocurrency. Such tool would change the way the diaspora sends money, making it cheaper and could be used to streamline the process of paying for government services such as electricity.  Cryptocurrencies would also foster ease of commerce among Haitians and with the world by bringing better payment systems to Haitian micro-enterprises. Lamothe expounded on the need for the diaspora to empower itself through electoral representation in the United States, including to better represent the interests of 68,000 Haitian TPS holders. He felt that the diaspora needs to be as focused on its empowerment in countries where they live as as they are on Haitian politics. He specifically mentioned the use of forums such as LOF1804 in Haiti and the diaspora and potential Haitian Diaspora Bitcoin Associations to educate the haitian public on cryptocurrencies.

We had callers from all over the diaspora including Canada, Florida, Haiti and Boston, among others.

Legacy of 1804 | HLLN Petition to the UN for Reparations #LOF1804

Join me this Friday at 9PM to discuss the Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network's (HLLN) petition to the UN's Secretary General demanding reparations, with co-host Hugues Girard, Jean St-Vil and callers.  Now in its 13th year in Haiti, the UN ''peacekeeping" MINUSTAH mission has been accused of child sex trafficking, rape and negligent infection of over 800,000 Haitians with cholera.

Also: Senator Youri Latortue wants MINUSTAH to help train an army, not just the police force in its last 6 months in the country. What should we make of this?

In our opening Pawol ak Mizik segment, award-winning singer TiFane will join us to discuss her return to the music scene.

Soundtrack (all songs by TiFane, in that order): Sekrè-a (Anprent, 2010)  | Ede'm Leve (Anprent, 2010) | Souke Sa (Sous La Peau, 2012)

POST-SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

Georges Bossous Jr.
talked about Word and Action's main goal: to create a full-service rape crisis and healing center in Haiti. He also discussed the recent sets of settlements to boys in Haiti who were sexually abused by Christian missionary Douglas Perlitz. The boys, most of whom now live in the streets, were each awarded $300K by Connecticut courts but no therapy, financial management or guidance.  Bossous strongly urges that whatever future settlements are awarded by the UN or other NGO's and missionaries adopt a wholistic approach incorporating healing.

Between 00:31 and 00:50 we were joined by Patrick Handal of Skandal who discussed the context of the rise of Konpa Nouvelle Génération after the departure of Baby Doc in 1986. We listened to a soon-to-be-released remix of his 1988 hit Ti-Bway and his new single and video Santim Wo. All will be featured on an upcoming comeback album titled 50 Kòb.

Listen to the full show to hear frequent contributors Hugues Girard, Daniella Bien-Aime and Jafrikayiti weigh in on Ezili Dantò's proposed demands to the UN Secretary General. (That discussion is in the last 25 Minutes of the show.)

Legacy of 1804 | Digicel in Haiti: Friend or Monopolistic Foe? | Debate with Marten Boute @mboute #LOF1804

This Friday at 9PM, join me as I welcome Digicel Chairman Maarten Boute and last week's guest Giles Colbert Charleston of  Association of Haitian Professionals (AHP) to debate Digicel's impact in Haiti today.

We'll discuss Digicel and the Haitian telecom market, specifically issues of competition, Digicel's (failed) attempt to block VoIPs, quality of service and various grievances about Digicel increasingly expressed by Haitians. Also, did Digicel meddle with the last presidential elections?

Giles Colbert Charleston agreed to come back to the show to debate what he meant when he said last week that Digicel is acting increasingly as a monopolistic actor in Haiti. This show was spurred by Digicel chairman Maarten Boute reaching out to me to take exception to this statement and asking for a chance to respond.

Join us for this promising debate!
