In segment one, we listen to Jafrikayiti interview Montréal-based Haitian artist Keb (Kebert Bastien) on why he considers it his duty to reflect and amplify important Haitian political issues in his music. (Kreyòl)) They are joined in the segment by Haitian-Canadian filmmaker Will Prosper to discuss his activism in Montreal on behalf of Pierre Coriolan, a mentally ill Haitian Canadian who was recently gunned down by the police in his home. In segment two, we hear Dahoud André of Eritye Papa Desalin interview Haitian labor leader Dominique St-Eloi on where the labor strikes in Haiti and their demands stand. (Kreyòl)

Join me this Friday at 9PM to discuss the Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network's (HLLN) petition to the UN's Secretary General demanding reparations, with co-host Hugues Girard, Jean St-Vil and callers.  Now in its 13th year in Haiti, the UN ''peacekeeping" MINUSTAH mission has been accused of child sex trafficking, rape and negligent infection of over 800,000 Haitians with cholera.

Also: Senator Youri Latortue wants MINUSTAH to help train an army, not just the police force in its last 6 months in the country. What should we make of this?

In our opening Pawol ak Mizik segment, award-winning singer TiFane will join us to discuss her return to the music scene.

This Friday night at 9PM, join me as I welcome journalist Joel Dreyfuss again, this time live. When he was last here we discussed his Washington Post article Only Haitians Can Save Haiti, the media's failure to predict Trump's win and his forthcoming book on 300 years of his family in

Joel has been a top editor at the leading technology magazines, a
senior editor and Tokyo bureau chief at Fortune, New York bureau chief of USA Today, executive editor of Black Enterprise and a feature writer and music critic for The Washington Post. He was managing editor of The Root from 2009 to 2011. He co-authored The Bakke Case: The Politics of Inequality. A native of Haiti and long-time New Yorker, Joel now lives in Paris, where he is completing a book about his family’s 300-year involvement with Haiti.

Legacy of 1804 with Dr. Gina Ulysse #LOF1804 #Haiti

Join me tonight at 9PM as I welcome anthropologist  Gina Ulysse to discuss her new book "Why Haiti Needs New Narratives." Dr. Ulysse will be reading from the book on Saturday at the Brooklyn Public Library. Find out more here.

On tonight's show she and I will chat it up on the mainstream U.S. press' handling of Ati Max Beauvoir's recent passing, including the pervasive use of the word V O O D O O to designate Vodou. Dr. Ulysse is one of many academics who have fought for the Library of Congress to stop the use of that spelling of the word given its association with Hollywood fantasies and racist caricatures of Haitians' ancestral spirituality.

We will also discuss Dr. Ulysse's recent pieces on racism in the Unites States and the #BlackLivesMatter movement for the blog Africa is a Country.

I also hope to talk about her choice to and the process of publishing her book in French, English and Kreyòl, all languages spoken by Haitians.

Dr. Ulysse is Professor of Anthropology at Wesleyan University.

Join host Alice Backer of www.kiskeacity.com as she discusses the Bwa Kayiman ceremony with Dr. Jerry Gilles and Yvrose Gilles of www.bookmanlit.com. The Bwa Kayiman ceremony kicked off the Haitian Revolution on August 14, 1791.

Doctor Jerry M. Gilles and Yvrose Gilles are co-editors of Bookmanlit.com a site that promotes study of Haitian-African culture. They have written several books and articles and have lectured at universities and museums. They have appeared on radio and television programs to talk about various aspects of Haitian History and Religion. Their most recent books include Bicentennial: Haiti's Gift to the World and Remembrance: Roots, Rituals, and Reverence in Vodou.

Doctor Jerry M. Gilles, specializes in High Risk Obstetrics. He graduated from Columbia University and obtained his doctorate in Medicine at the SUNY at Stony Brook.

Ms. Gilles obtained her undergraduate degree from Barnard College of Columbia University and obtained a Master of Science degree at Teacher's College of Columbia University. By family tradition, Ms. Gilles is descendant of both Dahomey and Kongo. By genetic analysis, she is also descendant of the Mede people of the Ivory Coast.

Dr. Céleste’s most recent publication, “Framing Haitians and Cubans in The New York Times: Enduring Imprints of Political History,” appeared in the Journal of Haitian Studies, Spring 2013, Volume 19, Number 1.

She is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in Interdisciplinary Degree Programs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She studies transnational representations of blackness, immigration, gender, and class, with a focus on the Caribbean, the United States and Latin America, particularly Haiti.

Legacy of 1804 with guests Manbo Dowoti Désir and Katleen Félix (AUDIO) #Haiti #Podcast

My guest last week on Legacy of 1804 was Manbo Dowoti Désir. We discussed Fèt Gede, the alleged cuttings of mapou trees by protestant missions in Haiti and the June 2012 constitutional amendment which repealed safeguards for religious freedom built into the 1987 Haitian constitution. We also discussed CARICOM's slavery reparations case. 

Dowoti Désir is a Manbo Asogwe and a scholar of Haitian Vodou. She is the Founder and President of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action Watch Group (www.ddpawatchgroup.info). She utilizes interfaith exchanges and cultural diplomacy to facilitate better understanding of AfroAtlantic spiritual systems in the global North. She has written extensively about the contemporary and sacred arts of the African Diaspora, its religions and sociopolitical issues impacting the global African community. Her book, 'Wòch Kase wòch: Redlining a Holocaust, Memorials and the People of the AfroAtlantic,' focusing on the right to memory, the built environment, and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, will be available in 2014. She is a graduate of Barnard College and has a Master's degree from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.

In the second hour, we also talked to Katleen Félix of Fonkoze and Zafèn about the 2nd Annual NAHP conference which took place last weekend.
