Learn to edit Wikipedia: Afrocrowd's new Training Videos are here
Check out Afrocrowd's new training video on our YouTube page. It's also broken down in smaller modules, including an intro to Afrocrowd and to what Wikipedia is.
We put the basics of wikipedia editing in there (including adding images and citations) but we are most excited about all the stuff that makes Afrocrowd Afrocrowd: making full use of the availability of the languages of the African diaspora, including Haitian Creole, and embarking on the movement's journey to meet its goal of knowledge equity by 2030, which means integration of oral knowledge into the largest online encyclopedia.
Enjoy the videos but also make sure to join Afrocrowd in-person meetups wherever you are, whether in New York, London, Paris or Spain. (Let me know if you want to me added to our monthly newsletter to receive dates and/or check out our website, Twitter and Facebook often.)

Post Show Highlights
Hour 1: Hugues Girard reassured us that he and his family were spared by Irma and updated us on the aftermath of the hurricane in the rest of Florida, the Jovenel Moïse administration's modification of the diaspora tax after much pressure and recent protests against the administration. We then talked about Caribbean solidarity for relief efforts in Puerto Rico and often overlooked Dominica, as well as some of the politics surrounding these disasters. Hour 2: Darnell Benoît, a teacher, introduced us to the Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project which she founded 12 years ago and manages to this day. Although I'd initially thought that the organization worked with adults, it actually focuses on high school students who have recently migrated from Haiti, do not speak English and are in danger of not graduating. Flanbwayan advocates for them at the city level, creates a haven for them, both pairing them with resources to help them graduate and providing a culture-filled environment for them after school. POST-SHOW HIGHLIGHTS
Announced issues were discussed in the following order:
In addition to my announced guests, Hugues Girard and Jafrikayiti, we were joined by Dr. Judite Blanc, a professor at UEH who has been held hostage in student/faculty negotiations in the past. In a long intervention in Kreyòl, Dr. Blanc deplored various Haitian stakeholders' indifference to the running over of a student (John Rock Gourgieder) by a car by of Professor Yves Blot. She explained the deterioration of the atmosphere at UEH and recalled her days as a student there when faculty actually debated issues rather than the current climate where violence seems to be the initial means of conflict resolution. She surmised that the social extraction of the students, who come from the most disadvantaged backgrounds in Haitian society, probably explains both the tensions between them and their middle class professors and the general indifference to or worse, endorsement of the violence with which their legitimate demands as students are met.
Jafrikayiti Jean Elissaint explained that based on his reputation as a leftist many are shocked that Professor Yves Blot could have committed such an act but also condemned it. (Note that the same sentiment is expressed by Dahoud André, host at Radyo Panou's Eritye Papa Desalin on Monday June 19th's installement of that show.)
I found out after the show that a petition is now being circulated in solidarity with John Rock Gourgieder, the student who was run over by a car on the UEH campus.

We discussed ways for the diaspora to creatively fund their initiatives in Haiti, without "international" or foundation funding. Dayanne happens to be mostly funded by Haiti-based businesses. "The concept of Haitians helping Haitians is often overlooked but I don't think Fleur de Vie would have been possible without the help of Haitian companies," said Dayanne. Katleen Felix from Haitian Hometown Associations Ressource Group (HHTARG) called in and was enthusiastic about this Haitian funded Haitian diaspora initiative. (Check my twitter feed @kiskeacity for Katleen's chime ins during the show.)

Doctor Jerry M. Gilles and Yvrose Gilles are co-editors of Bookmanlit.com a site that promotes study of Haitian-African culture. They have written several books and articles and have lectured at universities and museums. They have appeared on radio and television programs to talk about various aspects of Haitian History and Religion. Their most recent books include Bicentennial: Haiti's Gift to the World and Remembrance: Roots, Rituals, and Reverence in Vodou.
Doctor Jerry M. Gilles, specializes in High Risk Obstetrics. He graduated from Columbia University and obtained his doctorate in Medicine at the SUNY at Stony Brook.
Ms. Gilles obtained her undergraduate degree from Barnard College of Columbia University and obtained a Master of Science degree at Teacher's College of Columbia University. By family tradition, Ms. Gilles is descendant of both Dahomey and Kongo. By genetic analysis, she is also descendant of the Mede people of the Ivory Coast.
