Kalimah Priforce is the co-founder of Qeyno Labs, an education innovation startup that works with local partners and schools to close the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics) diversity gap in K-12 education by harnessing the interests of under-served youth into STEM career pathways using web and mobile-based technology and inclusive hackathons that promote mentorship and innovation in the app space. Qeyno recently launched the first hackathon focused on Black Male Achievement in Oakland and has been featured on Essence Magazine, Jet, KQED Newsroom, NPR’s “Tell Me More”, and PBS Newshour.

Doctor Jerry M. Gilles and Yvrose Gilles are co-editors of Bookmanlit.com a site that promotes study of Haitian-African culture. They have written several books and articles and have lectured at universities and museums. They have appeared on radio and television programs to talk about various aspects of Haitian History and Religion. Their most recent books include Bicentennial: Haiti's Gift to the World and Remembrance: Roots, Rituals, and Reverence in Vodou.

Doctor Jerry M. Gilles, specializes in High Risk Obstetrics. He graduated from Columbia University and obtained his doctorate in Medicine at the SUNY at Stony Brook.

Ms. Gilles obtained her undergraduate degree from Barnard College of Columbia University and obtained a Master of Science degree at Teacher's College of Columbia University. By family tradition, Ms. Gilles is descendant of both Dahomey and Kongo. By genetic analysis, she is also descendant of the Mede people of the Ivory Coast.

Legacy of 1804 #19 with Dr. Bertin Louis #ShamelesslyHaitian #Haiti

Join me this Friday at 9PM  as I discuss Haitians in the Bahamas and the #ShamelesslyHaitian hashtag with Dr. Bertin Louis.

Bertin M. Louis, Jr. is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Africana Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Louis studies the growth of Protestant forms of Christianity among Haitians in the Bahamas and the United States, which is featured in his forthcoming New York University Press book, “My Soul is in Haiti: Migration and Protestantism in the Haitian Diaspora of the Bahamas (2014).” He also studies stateless Bahamians of Haitian Descent.

Dr. Louis also informs students, faculty, and the public via radio and television about Haitian history and culture. Most recently, he created #ShamelesslyHaitian, a trending topic on Twitter.

Radio host and activist Berlotte Antoine will also join us to discuss  an up and coming civil legal clinic targeting Haitians in Brooklyn organized by Councilman Jumaane Williams .
