This film by Kervans Barthelemy starring Atibon Nazaire and Caroline Memnon was greeted by a standing ovation at the HCX filmfest at LIU's Brooklyn campus last weekend. HCX executive director Régine Roumain said it was the only film at the festival dealing with the Haitian diaspora experience and one of the best attended. It is hard to believe that filmmaker Kervans Barthelemy is only 25 as this work is going to have a major impact. Cast and crew were all present at the screening and were asked to stand up.

Other films included Children of Haiti for which I moderated the Q&A, Moloch Tropical by Raoul Peck, When the Drum Is Beating which aired at the opening night fundraiser, Jean Gentil, Gospel of the Creole Pig, various Jacmel-based Ciné Institute student pieces and Arnold Antonin's latest work. Bélizaire affair

Both editions contain multiple articles on the Belizaire arrest. I would highlight that apparently, Martelly, having left the country during the crisis that ensued after the arrest, is now disavowing responsibility for it. Bélizaire has been released, the Minister of Justice's job threatened and deputies and senators are striking back with various investigations.

Blogger reactions are varied and appear in Friday's edition:

Ilio Durandis, a Haitian Times contributor, is worried about implications for the rule of law. (CaribJournal)
Emann Joazil at Ekspoze asks Martelly to defuse the situation by admitting he was wrong.

Sonje Ayiti shares Donna Karan's latest collection, which is supposedly inspired by Haiti. Renowned Haitian painter Philippe Dodard provided some consulting on the collection. But as Nadine Mondestin (@zeklearts) wrote me: "Nice collection. Don't see the Haiti. Haiti is so not earth tones." Couldn't agree more. This collection is yet another indication that Haiti is the hot cause marketing trend. Bleh.

Love Haiti argues that Bill Clinton is Haiti's real president while Martelly is merely a lame duck puppet.

The 9 videos included in this edition make it quite media heavy. Yesterday was that kind of a day on Haitian YouTube!

Blogger and radio talk show Carel Pedre's channel (PedreCarel) has been posting segments of his TV show Digicel Stars. In today's media section, you will find 3 clips of the Cap-Haitien and Gonaïves contests but feel free to peruse the channel which offers many more segments. The judges (Man Lolo a.k.a. Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassègue, Alex Abellard and Michael Benjamin) and contestants alike are hilarious and the following clip is the funniest I have seen this season:

Télé Image's channel offers some great reporting by host Valério St-Louis about the MINUSTAH rape scandal. There are 5 clips in the media section of the paper. From the multi-segment interview with MINUSTAH spokesperson Eliana Nabaa, we learn that the victim's mother has received threats, that the Uruguayans themselves are in charge of the investigation about the rape and that contrary to what many papers reported, the four rapists are still in Haiti!!! There is also an interview with a Haitian legal specialist explaining what can be done on the legal front. Apparently, the immunity of the MINUSTAH troops only applies when they are furthering their peace keeping duties, which they were not in this case. Below is the clip of the demonstration in Port-Salut featuring an interview with the mayor and with Senator Youri Latortue among others:

Call this the Miss Haiti Universe and arts and crafts edition!

Miss Haiti Anedie Azael (@anedie01) posts a video of her every move on the pageant trail and so we are going to see a bunch of her until pageant night. There are 4 videos of her in today's edition (at the gym, putting on a mud mask, hanging out with Miss Turks and Caicos) but if you go to her YouTube page, there should be even more, including her tryouts as a chef this afternoon. That she manages to document and upload her every step while also partaking in the vertiginous Miss Universe contestant activities is a testament to her energy.

My favorite for today is one of her speaking creole with half-Haitian Miss Turks and Caicos. Haitians do get around the Caribbean and Latin America and this is a good illustration!

I also discovered the ingenuous Haitian Findings blog today which is a treasure trove of Haitian crafts and artisanal foods and products of the sort that will make you home sick and nostalgic. Under the Leisure and #Haiti tabs you will find posts on a crochet blanket, a recycled rice bag purse, a local alcoholic energy drink that should out compete vodka red bulls, a wooden necklace, Bèlzèb herbal hand made soaps, Jacmel based Moro Barouk creations and more. The recently started blog is written by Haitian born and raised MadeinHaiti and I really hope she keeps it up!

Yesterday's edition of Metro Newz by Télé Métropole in Haiti offers even more updates on what tropical storm Irene has left behind in terms of devastation. The good news is no lives were lost. The bad news is there were many floods including in camps of the displaced, damages to property and 1,000 people in government shelters.

Natcom (the former Teleco now 40% government owned) is requesting interconnection with the reluctant Digicel network and the end of the sabotage to its cables. The ball is now apparently in CONATEL's camp.

The August 19th edition covers the new biometric passports, and a memorial to those who disappeared in the Jan 12th, 2010 earthquake to be built in Titanyen by a diaspora association in collaboration with the ministry of Haitians abroad. Lastly, there is a segment on mobile provider Voilà's reinforced presence in Hinche.

The August 22d edition mainly covers warnings and preparations for tropical storm Irene which is expected to cause violent winds especially in the North. There is also a segment on a European Community initiative on disaster preparedness.

The vast majority of college-educated Haitians are overseas and many of them are very well-connected in their host countries. The economic potential is enormous. 3 million Haitians (probaby closer to 4) that hold $50 000 in equity in their homes (probably higher) currently hold (excluding savings or any other investments or holdings) $ 150 billion in real estate. 3 million Haitians that make $ 20 000 in income for example represent a $ 45 billion market, per year. This is about 10 times the size of the entire local Haitian economy. To put this in perspective, if the diaspora were a country, it would be Uruguay which has about 3.5 million people and an economy worth $ 40 billion. Panama has a similar population and is about half that economically.

Ce n'est pas toute la quantité de café produite dans l'arrondissement de Belle-Anse - regroupant les communes de Thiotte, Grand Gosier, Anse-à-Pitre et Belle-Anse - qui est, pour l'instant, commercialisée par la Coopcab. Une bonne partie de la production, plus que 50%, selon certaines estimations, est vendue dans la contrebande aux Dominicains. Ces derniers auraient exporté le café comme produit dominicain. Apportant de l'argent cash, les Dominicains payent le café à vil prix aux planteurs qui ne veulent pas passer par le circuit de la Coopcab. La cause? La coopérative ne dispose pas d'assez d'argent pour payer le café sur place.

Of Haitian Coffee:

(1) Café Forêt des Pins Bleus :
The Café Forêt des Pins Bleus comes from the best coffee producing region of Haiti called Thiotte (where is also the headquarters of COOPCAB), in south-east. Coffee is grown at an altitude of 1.300 to 1.350 meters. The infusion is characterized by an aroma and a superb fragrance, balanced acidity, a round body and a good aftertaste. All grains are dried in the sun, which explains their bluish color. The Café de la Forêt des Pins Bleus, is considered by connoisseurs in Italy, as the best coffee for espresso.

(2) Café Marre Blanche :
This coffee comes from the region bearing the same name in the mountains of south-east of Haiti. It is cultivated at an altitude of 1.400 meters and has a strong aroma with citrus flavors and a grassy aftertaste. The Green beans of Marre Blanche were the best sellers, on the Japanese market in 2009. The infusion has a wonderful aroma and a strong fragrance and good acidity and a round body. The Café Marre Blanche, without added sugar because of its natural sweetness, is appreciated by connoisseurs.

(3) Kafé Gwo Chwal :
Gwo Chwal (Creole for "Big Horse") comes from the region of the same name, in the West Department of Haiti. Like the other coffee of COOPCAB, this coffee is dried in the sun. Kafe Gwo Chwal grows at an altitude of 1.500 to 1.600 meters. This is probably the best gourmet coffee from Haiti. The tasting of Gwo Chwal was a delight for the international community because of its beautiful fragrance, its complex aroma and a lemony aftertaste. This coffee has good acidity and a round body.

Wondering which of these varieties Rebo, my favorite packaged coffee, is made of. Would it be #2, the sweet one? :-)

Quoting Carla Murphy who highlights a regrettable tendency in international press coverage of Haiti in her latest DH blog post:

I really, really wanted to like Mac McClelland’s one-year anniversary article, Aftershocks: Welcome to Haiti’s Reconstruction Hell. Good writing aside however—and the fact that these guys and many of these guys dug it—I have a problem with a 6,000-word piece of journalism that holds no specific office or official to account for Port-au-Prince’s misery upon miseries [...]

That’s like there being a decade-long rape epidemic in New York City and a reporter not asking any public official, why? Followed by, what are you doing about it? Followed by, why aren’t you doing anything about it? — Snow wasn’t removed on time after a huge storm this holiday season and within hours every New Yorker knew the name of the head of the department of sanitation. No reporter would’ve covered that story without answering the main question: “Who f%$ked up?”—and that’s just snow. The same news gathering standard should apply to rape.

Unfortunately McClelland’s, “no one’s in charge” message regarding Haiti is the norm. Foreign journalists and bloggers rarely name officials below the level of Bill Clinton, René Préval, Jean-Max Bellerive or Nigel Fisher. (I recall being pleasantly surprised last year when a real-life mayor of Port-au-Prince appeared during a 60 Minutes segment.)

But bureaucracies —as broken, inefficient, corrupt, overwhelmed, under-resourced, under-staffed or disparate as they may be—exist in Haiti.

Camps have residential leadership structures. Various international NGOs also visit or manage camps. The UN’s International Organization for Migration oversees camp coordination. Then of course there is local government, police and Haiti’s women’s and health ministries as well as the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC). Journalists undercut any possibility of public pressure on the cogs within the above bureaucracies when we write them out of our stories… when we write them out of the public suffering for which they are responsible.
But these omissions happen again and again, as is to be expected, when parachute journalists write for parachute readers.

Looks like Michel (Sweet Micky) Martelly --who placed second in the first round according to the OAS -- has gleaned the most followers. This makes sense because he attracted plenty of tech-savvy supporters, including @carelpedre (18,000 + followers on Twitter) and @karljeanjeune, two twenty-somethings who made a name for themselves by tweeting the earthquake live. @carelpedre and @ramhaiti, both Micky supporters, are also arguably the two Haiti-based Haitians with the most followers on Twitter (18,000 and 15,000 respectively).

With a measly 199 followers, @Judecelestin10's campaign seems to have underestimated Twitter as a communications tool. Or is it that the candidate of the ruling party simply felt he did not need as much help as the others? Even @CharlesHBaker, who did not place in the top three, has about 5 times as many followers!

Front-runner @mirlandemanigat who is 70 and @charlesHBaker who is in his sixties deserve kudos for having accounts and have each scored around 1,500 followers.

While Manigat has not posted since Christmas, Sweet Micky has posted steadily this week after a reprieve earlier this month. But neither post as much as Célestin who was asking followers to vote for him even while his INITE party colleagues were not so subtly inviting him to withdraw.

Initial election results placed Manigat first and Célestin second, sending them both to the second round. But allegations of fraud on the part of Célestin's INITE, the party of current President René Préval, caused the OAS to issue a report which placed Martelly, not Célestin in second place.

The Célestin saga reached a peak yesterday when even as foreign embassies were pressuring his party to withdraw his candidacy, he posted the following:

What makes Haitian tweeters laugh at this tweet is that Jude Célestin, not Michel Martelly, is the one currently being "encouraged" to concede by the international community. Just when we were least expecting it, the candidate with the least followers on Twitter started using the tool to flex some unlikely muscle...

But there is more. Today he posted this:

Am I missing something? Does this mean Manigat wins? To be continued.

I spent the last two days aggregating all Haitian blogs known to me in this neat collection:

We are far from that day in 2005 when Georgia Popplewell, then Caribbean Editor of Global Voices asked me "why are there no Haitian Blogs?". Haitians have caught on to web 2.0 in the era of Twitter so if many the blogs in the collection are written by diaspora Haitians, Haitians in Haiti are certainly twittering, as you will see in my "Friends in Haiti" Twitter list:

Haiti twitterers like Carel Pèdre used social and citizen media to break out some of the first images and news the world found out about the EQ. This has won him several awards.

Among the Haitian bloggers based in Haiti are: Alain "The Haitian" Armand, Amstyl Polycarpe, Nancy Leconte Chapoteau, Yael Talleyrand, Carel Pèdre, Régine Zamor, Nadine Mondestin, Richard Morse etc. (As most bloggers today most both tweet and blog. After all tweeting is none other than micro-blogging and it is only so as not to drawn out the bloggers that I did not put many twitter feeds in the aggregator. Thanks Marvin Chéry for pointing it out.)

One unfortunate fact: Richard Morse's blog at the Huffington Post does not have a feed of its own. (Can you hear me cringe?) As his 14,000 twitter followers may make him be the best known Haitian blogger today, I thought of putting his twitter feed in the aggregator but backtracked when I realized that it drowned out the other blogs. (Most bloggers post once a week while tweeters can tweet 20-100 times a day.) But thankfully, you can catch him in the Friends in Haiti Twitter list. (Update: Richard Morse's HuffPo feed has been found and added to the aggregator.)

There is a ways to go in putting citizen and social media tools in the hands of Haitians who neither read, write (about 50% of the population) nor speak English and for influencers to begin viewing social and citizen media as part of literacy. Several experiments with this are being done in India and with migrant laborers in California, using video or the social media tool everyone possesses, even in Haiti: the dumbphone. We will get there and I have no doubt that the aggregator will reflect those voices within a reasonable time.

From World Bank economist Dilip Ratha's Blog about migrations, remittances and development:

"By the way, if you are wondering whether Haitian immigrants are too poor to invest, consider this fact from the Current Population Survey of the US: nearly one-third of Haitian immigrants in the US belong to households that earned more than $60,000 in 2009. In comparison, less than 15% of the immigrants from Mexico, Dominican Republic and El Salvador in the US had that level of household income. A quarter of Haitian immigrants, especially women, are reportedly in the relatively higher paying health care and education sectors; only a small number of them are in the construction sector."

SHELTER – More than 160,000 pieces of plastic sheeting and more than 13,000 tents are on the way and should be here before the end of March. They will benefit thousands of families who are still looking for shelter ahead of the rainy season.

PRESIDENT – President Rene Preval is heading to Washington where he will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama as Congress will likely put pressure on lending institutions to forgive Haiti's debt and will consider measures that will help revive Haiti's economy.

FOOD – Two million people, or 300,000 families, in the next few weeks will receive food kits that include rice and beans, oil and other supplies. WFP has worked with the Haitian government, along with local authorities, to identify those most in need.

MAILBOX – Listeners asked about what they should do about a variety of subjects, including whether they should continue paying rent on a property that collapsed, and exams for students behind in school.

CAMP SAFETY – At several camps, our reporter found out that residents have organized themselves to provide security and other services. Before these "brigades", all kinds of crime, including rape and petty theft, took place all over the camp. That has stopped, according to camp residents, thanks to the action of the brigades.

CULTURE/MINISTER'S SONG - Culture and Communication Minister Marie Laurence Jocelyn Lassague is well known for her activism on behalf of women in Haiti. Now she has written a song paying tribute to many activist women who died in the earthquake. Our reporter also talks with the musicians who are working with the Minister.

IDs – Haitians without ID cards can now have access to the office that issues the national identity cards. The National Office of Identification opened in Babiole this past Monday.

LATRINES – DINEPA is offering technical help to people who need help digging latrines the camps. People can get that help by either talking to the camp leaders, or by calling this number: 25-13-20-78.

HEALTH/MALARIA – Eleven cases of malaria have been identified, including six soldiers and three Haitians who live outside the country. Comes with tips people need to follow to avoid mosquitoes.

IDP FIGURES – Last polling done in the camp behind the Petion Ville Club found that between 35 and 40 thousand people live in that camp. It's the largest camp among more than 300 in the metropolitan area.

HOTLINE/REPORT VIOLENCE – If someone knows someone who has been suffered violence at the hands of MINUSTAH soldiers or others working with the organization, call this number: 37-02-64-86.

HEALTH/VACCINATION – Health officials are taking their vaccination campaign to Leogane and Gressier, starting March 9.

HOUSING – The group, which works with the Catholic Church, will build 200 houses for displaced Haitians in towns such as Miragoane and St. Michel.

WEATHER – Light rain falling over the camps and over Port-au-Prince for the next few days.

AGRICULTURE - Around 50,000 farmers in the Artibonite Valley will benefit from aid from the FAO. The help will come in the form of rice, corn and vegetables.

MAILBOX – We answer listeners' questions: One of the questions today concerns distribution of tourist visas to the US; scholarships to study in Canada and traffic office.

DEBRIS – Truitter does not only get rubble. Families who scavenge there find food there, sometimes a body, among the rubble and the excrement from camp latrines that is being dumped there.

FOOD – Farmers in the Artibonite Valley are going to increase agricultural production, thanks to seeds, fertilizer and know-howm, that it ss going to be offered by USAID.

HOTLINE – Women and Children who have been abused by MINUSTAH personnel can call directly to this number: 37-02-64-86 to report violence against them. Each case will be investigated by MINUSTAH.

HOUSING – Engineers evaluated 1,902 houses in metropolitan Port-au-Prince that they say must be destroyed. Work will be going faster soon as there are 250 other engineers being trained as investigators and evaluators.

DONOR SUPPORT – The European Union has donated $300 million to emergency and reconstruction work in Haiti. Some of that money will go to pay salaries of civil service workers.

CULTURE – The Pantheon National Museum wants to the be the keeper of Haiti's treasures that are in the hands of collectors and institutions that might not be able to care for them in the aftermath of the devastating January 12 earthquake.

WEATHER – More rain expected in Port-au-Prince and other parts of Haiti. The recommendation is for people to stay away from unstable ground that might become dangerous in the rains.

MAILBOX – Dominique Dorisan asked whether Haiti could get another earthquake with the same energy that was released January 12. Another listener asked about whether Haiti has any volcano.

SHELTER/Feature story - Space is at such a premium in Port-au-Prince that even the divider between Route Nationale #2 leading to the south has been serving as a camp site. Dozens of people have built makeshift rooms there.

ELDER – Some elder Hatians complain they are being ignored for help. Helpage, an organization that focuses on older people, has been delivering food and supplies to older people in the CroixdesPres.

CAMP SITES - Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive approved 5 sites that will be used as organized camps, along with eight other sites that will be used to dump construction debris.

DEBRIS REMOVAL - Joaseus Nadere of the Ministry of Public Works said his department has set a timetable to clear debris from priority buildings set by the government, such as schools and public offices.

SECURITY/PRISONS - Out of the 5,000 prisoners that broke out of their cells following the earthquake, 111 have been recaptured and brought back to the Penitentier National. Police have a number where people can call if they notice an escaped prisoner in their neighborhood.

SHELTER/ENVIRONMENT - IDPs are cutting down trees to stretch their plastic sheetings, or to construct temporary housing in the camps. Environmental experts are saying that cutting down trees for housing solves one problem while exacerbating another.

WEATHER - It's going to be cloudy throughout the capital over the next couple of days.

MAILBOX - Witza Petit-Antoine from ENDK answers questions from listerners in Leogane and other sites.

FOOD - WFP Spokes person, Fredrique Pierre, tells listeners the latest on how the food distribution is going on.

Alexandra Foucard has been awarded an NAACP Award for Outstanding lead actress and was nominated for a Grammy Nomination for Guys and Dolls. She was born in Haiti.

I was very touched to hear Paolo Pouponneau sing Boukman Eksperyans' classic Tribilasyon.

Except for the fact that I was inexplicably prevented from charging my iPhone (hence the very camera which filmed these goodies) at some point, a fun time was had by all, moi included.

Having interviewed me 3 days after my arrival in Haiti (Episode 19) , Scott Hertzog of Haiti in Focus podcast wanted to catch upon my return from the trip 7 days later. The resulting podcast, recorded last weekend, was published in two segments.

In the first segment (Episode 20) which was published two days ago, we discuss the red/zone green zone distinction, the usefulness of citizen media in a country where not everyone reads or writes, ways in which Haitian-Americans lingering on waitlists can be put to good use and much, much more.

Haiti: Régine Zamor on Do-It-Yourself Volunteering

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI, 30 January, 2010

Régine Zamor is a Haitian-American based in New Rochelle, New York, but raised in Brooklyn. Her Haitian family is from Martissant. She decided to come to Haiti after the 12 January earthquake and volunteer on her own, without signing up with a major NGO. She had contacts in Haiti and the Dominican Republic before arriving, having volunteered with Haitian indentured laborers in Batey Ocho, Barahona, in the Dominican Republic last summer. Her family and friends in the United States were supportive of her decision.

Régine is a film producer and writer who just finished a documentary film on street children in Cap Haïtien, titled Bagay Dwòl. She has been blogging about the film and about her first-response volunteering at her blog, Bagay Dwol Journal.

When she initially arrived in Haiti, a couple of days after the quake, she researched where her help was needed and wound up volunteering in food distribution, information sharing — both in person and through her blog — and in medical supplies distribution through various contacts at smaller NGOs such as SOIL, Wynn Farm, and COHEF.

Georgia Popplewell and I met with her at the Hotel Oloffson a couple of afternoons ago.

“I didn't want to wait”

When I told other Haitians living in the United States that I was traveling to Haiti with Global Voices, many who were on waiting lists with large well-known NGOs and US government agencies expressed dismay. For example, my friend Alex — who holds a masters degree in public health administration and has been working in the healthcare industry in the United States for years — was itching to be picked from a volunteer list. When Régine explained to Georgia and me how she made it to Haiti shortly after the quake, I immediately thought of Alex and all the others waiting in the U.S.

Régine decided not to wait, and in this video she explains how she connected with the work she wound up doing:

Régine and other first-responders took food distribution in their own hands and at their own cost

I have only spotted one UN-run food distribution line since my arrival here a week ago. It was near the National Palace, and proved so chaotic that either tear gas or pepper spray was allegedly used on the crowd. A handful of UN officers seemed to be handling a crowd of thousands. A system for the distribution of the global influx of aid by either the UN or the Haitian government has yet to materialize. But in speaking to Régine, it became clear that many Haitians and others willing to help took matters into their own hands during the first-response period.

Here Régine explains how she coordinated with an NGO contact in the Dominican Republic to buy food, have it sent to Port-au-Prince, and distribute it to Orphelinat l'Amour du Bon Berger.

When we met Régine at the Oloffson, an American buddy from her hometown of New Rochelle, NY, interrupted our meeting to introduce some doctors to her. Régine left Georgia and me to go and meet them, and eventually introduced us to one of them, an American doctor who has served Haitian patients in the Bahamas for the past 11 years. She turned to us and said: “He just agreed to come to the Sité Solèy Clinic with me tomorrow morning.”

That is precisely what Régine means by her role in “information sharing”. Via word of mouth and using all means available, she has connected tens of people to whatever service needs she has identified or become aware of.

AGRICULTURE - Farmers in Leogane, Petit-Goave and Grand-Goave start to receive support

Farmers in Leogane, Petit-Goave and Grand-Goave are seeing some of their irrigations channels cleared up. In addition, these farmers will start receiving farm inputs and authorized seeds that FAO will be supplying.
